Senior Buyer - Music - Fixed Term Contract

We’re looking for ambitious an experienced Senior Buyer to join our Music category, based in Milton Keynes on a Fixed Term Contract. You’ll develop and be responsible for the planning and execution of sourcing, selection, and trading strategy for a given product department / range, ensuring that we always offer our customers the highest quality and the greatest value.

Senior Buyers here at Sainsbury’s Argos have the freedom and autonomy to succeed. From the outset, you’ll think quickly and act decisively. You’ll build strong relationships with suppliers, implement the category strategy to maximise sales and improve margins. The credibility to influence at a very senior level in the business is vital. You’ll be able to act as a role model for others in the team, ensuring that we keep one step ahead of retail trends, competitor activities and consumer demands.

A proven track record in delivering and maintaining a distinct point of difference across your category is essential. You must have the experience to review suppliers, introduce new sources and negotiate trading terms. Your Buying experience will give you the knowledge to oversee supply, ensure continuity and product availability. A background in a complex, constantly changing food retail environment would be ideal.

What I need to do:

Range

Create and implement a customer driven strategic vision for their ranges in line with the category strategy agreed with the senior stakeholders with clearly defined and measurable initiatives
Deliver the own brand proposition through product design, product briefs, sourcing and negotiation of exclusive propositions to differentiate us vs the market
To liaise with the Product technologist in setting the quality criteria for own label products ensuring the optimal balance between quality and price is maintained focus on continuous improvement, customer reviews and customer returns
Influence global brands on their product offer to build a credible curated customer proposition
Using knowledge of markets and suppliers, inform the category budget and create and implement trading plans to achieve category strategy
Manage pricing across category to achieve a competitive position without compromising profitability
In conjunction with Merchandising, develop and approve budget phasing with reforecasts throughout the year

Negotiating & Sourcing

In conjunction with the Senior Merchandiser, develop and implement joint business plans with suppliers in line with department strategy and set specific performance targets for suppliers.
To liaise with global suppliers and sourcing offices to identify the most cost-effective suppliers and to support overseas teams with own label product development
To achieve optimum product cost through effective negotiation with suppliers

Product Development & Launch

Deliver the own brand proposition through product design, product briefs, sourcing and negotiation of exclusive propositions to differentiate us vs the market. Work with Design teams for development of own brand products, and liaise with the Product Technologist in setting the quality criteria for own label products ensuring the optimal balance between quality and price is maintained

Promotions & Events

Work strategically with brands to secure exclusive, winning, and compelling promotions and events; Allowing us to win with customers.
Develop a compelling promotional plan for the category, working cross-functionally with the Marketing and Digital teams to create compelling multichannel marketing executions.

Trading

In conjunction with merchandising team use knowledge of markets and suppliers, inform the category budget and create and implement trading plans to achieve
Monitor market trends, competitor activity, price positioning and stock availability and work in partnership with Senior Merchandisers to react appropriately to maximise sales, profitability and market share
Conduct regular store visits and build relationships with the retail team, gaining a commercial awareness of competitor position & activity

Stock & Supply

Develop strategies to optimise value to the business through supply chain costs, stock values, availability, sales, margins and return on investment.
Own the customer facing product content execution across all channel (instore, catalogue and digital)
To work in conjunction with the merchandising team to ensure product execution is well planned and delivery excellent availability and consistency to our customers
Monitor market trends, competitor activity, price positioning and stock availability and react appropriately to maximise sales, profitability and market share

Team Management & Support

Lead and develop a high performing team. Motivating and develop the team to achieve more through coaching, succession planning and great career conversations
Embracing change - taking a proactive approach to supporting adoption of new ways of working in Non-food and role modelling the Sainsbury’s Argos values.
Play a pivotal role supporting the Buying Manager & Head of Department in key business cross functional projects
Travel between our sites, and Foreign travel in line with business needs
