Chris, Buying & Merchandising
Unusually, I actually came here from a Royal Navy background. The skills I’d acquired meant I was best suited to project management, and I briefly considered going into finance. In the end it was retail that won me over though, because it’s so much more relatable. I was especially drawn to Argos because it’s not just a household name; it’s a real British institution.
"On-the-job learning is the best kind of professional development"
“I jumped straight into a senior role, but I was given all the training I needed to make a success of it. Just one example is the leadership programme, which helped me get promoted in just 15 months. I find on-the-job learning is the best kind of professional development though, and that’s never in short supply around here.”
"My most exciting project so far has been the Christmas Gift Guide"
“Probably my most exciting project so far has been the Christmas Gift Guide. Everyone has childhood memories of circling the presents they wanted in the guide, so I think it’s become something of a national treasure. It gives me real pride to have been a part of it and to know I helped pick the presents kids will be circling for their wish lists.”
