Brand and Marketing Strategy Manager

In a nutshell

You will support the Senior Brand Strategy Manager with the scoping, development and delivery of brand and marketing strategies for Sainsbury’s Argos, including brand strategy and positioning for our varied portfolio of own brands. You will look ahead on a horizon of no less than one year and support in setting the foundations for the activity of the rest of the Marketing department. You will also work closely with our commercial function, leading the strategic marketing agenda for key focus categories. You will answer some of the biggest strategic questions surrounding our brands and marketing strategy, engaging and influencing people across a wide range of functions and grades to ensure we are all working together to deliver the best possible execution of the brand purpose for each of our brands.

What I need to do

•Support with the development of marketing strategies for Argos, Tu and Sainsbury’s GM, including bringing together corporate, commercial and retail strategies with the voice of the customer to build a plan that will drive the customer plan and ultimately the execution

•Support in the development and refinement of the brand purpose for each of our brands and play an active role in their rollout and guardianship – this includes both our retailer brands and our portfolio of own brands

•Support the Senior Brand Strategy Manager to identify, scope, develop and deliver to proof of concept stage some of the biggest Sainsbury’s Argos brand strategy projects and propositions (e.g. Loyalty) that have the potential to have huge impact on our customers and our business

•Independently and proactively identify opportunities to develop Sainsbury’s Argos brands, based on brand or market expertise

•Where appropriate, support in the development of the Group brand proposition (e.g. Masterbrand) working with teams and stakeholders across the Group business

•Manage a variety of projects through the phases of brand strategy:

-Define the question, key objectives and deliverables of the project

-Develop hypotheses and test these hypotheses with insight, working with the Insights team to gather and analyse insights and data to help identify/clarify the opportunity and enable the project scope to be defined. This includes drafting the opportunity on a page and the development of the business case

-Develop our point of view and the brand strategy, working collaboratively with and influencing stakeholders across the business. Depending on project requirements, this includes creating project plans, preparing progress reports, developing creative assets, gaining buy in from senior stakeholder forums and setting up and managing the required forums and working groups

-Write the strategic brief and manage handover to relevant team(s)

-Post implementation review - track and measure performance against KPIs

•Continue to assist with the project management of brand strategy projects beyond proof of concept stage supporting the agreed business owner to execute on plan and to budget

What I need to know

•Previous experience in brand strategy with the proven ability to develop and grow brands, driving real change

•Previous experience of developing and setting marketing strategies

•Demonstrate a strong understanding of our brands, customers and the wider market

•Track record of successfully project managing large, strategic projects and programmes on time and to budget

•Experience of influencing and engaging multiple stakeholders from across different divisions with differing objectives and needs

Supplier / agency management experience

•Good strategic thinking and problem solving abilities

•Strong communication skills – verbal and written

•Degree level qualification or equivalent

•This role works closely with the Senior Brand Strategy Manager
