In a nutshell
This role be an analyst within the Customer and Market Insight function to help us to understand our performance against the market in the categories we compete within.
The team’s objective is to manage the relationship with multiple Market Data providers, ensure we submit accurate and timely data to them and then analyse their output in order to provide insight into the wider business. The team will use multiple first and second-hand sources to compile insight on how we are performing, and how some of our major competitors are performing. They will be seeking new sources of data to supplement the insight and will look to produce and automate reports that continually feed timely and highly relevant analysis into the wider teams.
What you need to do
This role will primarily be responsible for performing analysis on the outputs from the market data providers, amalgamating multiple sources and individual data points together to provide a coherent storyline relevant to the question being asked. Working with the Data and reporting teams where appropriate, they will design and automate operational reports to minimise manual effort on repeatable tasks.
Specifically, this Analyst Role will:
They will be an exceptional analyst and able to analyse complex datasets, visualise them in appropriate ways and extract key pieces of insight. They will use multiple analytics techniques as necessary will apply them to pieces of analysis as appropriate.
Analyse Market share data from multiple providers, extract competitor insight from news stories and combine to produce as complete a view of the market dynamics within a specific category(s).
They will take on ad-hoc questions from business stakeholders on specific competitors, categories or products and gather all available market insight on them and present their findings in the appropriate way.
Working closely with business stakeholders, specially the finance and commercial teams across both the entire Sainsburys Argos business. They will naturally work very closely with the insight teams within CMI, providing the market and competitor context around specific questions.
Be a custodian of our market and competitor data, working with the business teams and third parties to ensure it is coherent and reporting accurate. They will feed requirements into the Data management team for new reports to automate processes.
This role will play an active position within both Sainsburys Argos and Sainsburys Group analytical community, leading activities and proactively championing the community.
How I will succeed
You will be a strong analyst, you will be adept at understanding the problems at the heart of a stakeholder’s questions and able to determine and execute the most appropriate analytical methodologies to answer it. You will communicate your findings clearly to non-technical audiences and be constantly seeking new ways of understanding the context of their questions.
What you need to know
At its core this role is about reporting, analysis and insight into our market data and therefore has to:
Be a strong analyst, you will have considerable experience in high paced business environments in turning, often vague business questions, into a piece of analysis that will answer the problems behind the original question.
A good ability at understanding a business question and selecting one or more analytical techniques and data sources to obtain as accurate and robust answer as possible
Strong technically with Advanced Excel & Microsoft office skills; you may also have experience of other platforms such as SQL, R, Python, Tableau, PowerBI or Qlikview which would be helpful but are not essential
Experience of analysing Market Data is advantageous

Be an excellent communicator, credible and articulate, with excellent presentation and interpersonal skills. You will be comfortable pulling the interesting story from complex datasets and presenting your findings in an engaging manner.
Be able to demonstrate the ability to explain your findings to Senior levels within the organisation (up to Senior Manager level), you have good stakeholder management capability
