Digital Trading Manager – Role Summary
Ensuring the successful day to day trading of owned categories through site merchandising and optimisation of customer journey.
Engage closely with Commercial and Marketing colleagues to ensure short term actions are taken and also to feed in to weekly and period reporting requirements.
Leading a team of Digital Trading Executives to deliver successful commercial results through optimisation of the digital customer experience, driven by analytics and targeting sales, conversion and digital participation.
Translating the category strategies into a detailed 6-9 month digital category plan, and ensuring successful delivery of this plan across the digital channels.

CATEGORY PERFORMANCE & PLANNING
Deliver successful results through smart digital trading of key category priorities and optimisation of the customer experience.
Lead digital projects that will grow the performance of your categories. Ensure all requirements are fed in, planned and delivered on time.
Responsible for best-in-class web merchandising, through effective planning, briefing & review of campaigns, ensuring other digital teams have necessary information in a timely manner.
Work collaboratively with the Digital Trading Lead to understand the Digital Trading Strategy for the coming year. Create category plans to align with the trading strategy and contribute to its success.
Build collaborative relationships with the Trading, Promotions, Marketing and wider Digital Teams. Regularly communicate with these teams to inform and influence future commercial activity
CUSTOMER & SUPPLIER ENGAGEMENT
Use analytics and customer insight to inform category plans and feed into a continuous improvement plan of your areas
Using helpful frameworks, identify customer problems or opportunities and solve these through website merchandising and/or customer acquisition activities or initiatives.
Build strong relationships with brands to present the opportunities to invest in digital marketing and content, typically on a performance basis; targeting segments of engaged people, with a view to cover each point of the purchase funnel.
TEAM MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP
Lead, coach and develop your team of Digital Trading executives ensuring they are meeting daily targets across Sales/Conversion/Participation.
Responsible for recruitment, personal development, succession planning and pipeline planning – this may involve cross-category planning.
Liaison with other Digital Trading Managers to ensure best-practise category examples are captured and shared across the business.
DIMENSIONS (FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY)
Job holder has no direct responsibilities for budgets. However, budget may need to be sought by other teams to facilitate some projects.
Job holder needs to be aware of financial impacts of decisions & to ensure risks & opportunities are mitigated / flagged to budget holder.
Job holder may be delegated ownership of budgets related to specific projects.
DIMENSIONS (BREADTH OF ROLE AND IMPACT WITHIN THE ORGANISATION)
Role will involve the holder planning Digital Trading support 3-9 months out, and ensuring they are delivered, so a combination of longer term strategic thinking, and short term implementation work is needed.
The role holder will need to influence other stakeholders around the business (Implementation, Planning, Trading, Marketing, Digital Marketing, etc.) to ensure we can achieve the goals we set out, by obtaining all information/deliverables we need.
Key day to day relationship holder with mid-level digital management, trading managers and buying managers.
DIMENSIONS (STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT)
Job holder needs to be capable of influencing to a senior level across the wider Digital teams & operating companies that constitute Sainsbury’s Argos while appreciating the differing cultures & priorities prevalent.
Job holders needs to be capable of securing support for proposals & plans across functions.
Job holder to be able to build relationships & effectively influence external agencies, suppliers, & external organisations up to senior management level.
YOU SHOULD HAVE:
Solid experience working in a Digital role within a retail organisation.
Direct Team management experience of a team of 1 person.
Ability to demonstrate a clear customer focus in all aspects of role.
The capacity to lead and influence stakeholders.
Excellent communication skills, and be comfortable presenting to diverse audiences
A sense of the market in which we operate; a good holistic understanding of the Digital landscape and wider retail environment.
