Digital Trading Lead (Milton Keynes or Coventry)

In a nutshell

Drive successful commercial results across the digital channels, by setting the Digital Category Strategy for the next 12 months.
Use insight and analysis to inform category planning, drive through new initiatives, and improve category performance with focus on increased sales, conversion, digital participation and customer metrics.
Ensure digital sales growth of relevant categories through successful digital merchandising and optimisation of the customer experience. Engage closely with Commercial and Marketing colleagues to ensure short term actions are taken and also to feed in to weekly and period reporting requirements.
Manage and lead a team of Digital Trading Managers & Digital Trading Executives.
Using high levels of credibility and commercial focus, to accelerate digital trading thinking and opportunities across the broader business. Share success stories and case studies widely.
Develop strong networks with key stakeholder teams and individuals (both within and outside of the Digital function) and utilise this network to deliver strong category performance.

KEY RESULT AREAS

CATEGORY PERFORMANCE & PLANNING

Lead team to utilise available tools and commercial acumen to profile keyword based market demand over time to arrive at a commercial and well informed view of when we should time category promotional and marketing activities.
Using insight and customer data, we plan 12 months out to drive digital revenue. We feed this information into overall Category Plans to help inform product selection and brand activity.
Ensure weekly targets are met across Sales/Conversion/Participation through your team’s successful merchandising and optimisation of the customer experience.
Responsible for best-in-class web merchandising, through effective planning, briefing & review of campaigns, ensuring other digital teams have necessary information in a timely manner.
Act as a lead for big digital events and campaigns e.g. Black Friday, Sale, New Range Launch, taking responsibility for execution & performance across digital channels.
Lead, coach and develop the team of digital trading executives and digital trading managers ensuring they understand the 12-month strategy for their categories, and are clear on the part they play in the planning and execution of this strategy.

CUSTOMER & SUPPLIER ENGAGEMENT

Create an environment (and helpful frameworks) where your team identify customer problems or opportunities and solve these through website merchandising and/or customer acquisition activities or initiatives.
Through a strong understanding of Performance Marketing channels, work with our brands and commercial teams to advise digital marketing teams of additional budget opportunities and category priorities; implemented by the Digital Marketing and Media Business teams.
Engage regularly with strategic brands to share digital performance measures, identify brand priorities and digital opportunities, and ensure product information improvements are being progressed with the relevant internal and external teams.
Build strong relationships with brands to present the opportunities to invest in digital marketing and content, typically on a performance basis; targeting segments of engaged people, with a view to cover each point of the purchase funnel.
Feed requirements for best-in-class merchandising into the digital product roadmap.

TEAM MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP

Manage a team of Digital Trading Managers & Digital Trading Executives (on average 6-8 people).
Responsible for recruitment, personal development, succession planning and pipeline planning – this may involve cross-category planning.
Liaison with other Digital Trading Leads to ensure best-practise category examples are captured and shared across the business.
Senior member of the Digital team – responsible for influencing other teams to ensure commercial requirements are fed into overall Digital plan.
Dotted line/Matrix responsibility for Product Information colleagues within Trading Cells. Establish strong ways of working with Digital Intelligence representatives in order to prioritise areas of focus.

YOU SHOULD HAVE:

Extensive experience working in a senior Digital role within a retail organisation.
Team management experience of a team of 4+ people, including management level direct reports.
Ability to demonstrate a clear customer focus in all aspects of role.
The capacity to lead, influence and encourage others to think differently
Experience of meaningful engagements; you’ll have incredible communication skills, and be comfortable presenting to diverse audiences.
A clear sense of the market in which we operate; a good holistic understanding of the Digital landscape and wider retail environment.

DIMENSIONS (FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY)

Responsible for the achievement of Digital revenue sales and participation budgets for their category areas.
Job holder has no direct responsibilities for cost budgets. However, budget may need to be sought by other teams to facilitate some projects.
Job holder needs to be aware of financial impacts of decisions & to ensure risks & opportunities are mitigated / flagged to budget holder.
Job holder may be delegated ownership of budgets related to specific projects.

DIMENSIONS (BREADTH OF ROLE AND IMPACT WITHIN THE ORGANISATION)

Role will involve the holder planning projects 6-12 months out, and ensuring they are delivered, so a combination of longer term strategic thinking is key, while also understanding day to day impacts to these plans.
The role holder will need to influence other stakeholders around the business (Content, Merchandising, Trading, Marketing, Digital Marketing, Development) to ensure we can achieve the goals we set out, by obtaining all information/deliverables we need.
Key day to day relationship holder with senior level digital management, trading directors and trading managers.

DIMENSIONS (STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT)

Job holder needs to be capable of influencing to a senior level and director level across the wider Trading, Digital, Marketing Teams, & operating companies that constitute Argos while appreciating the differing cultures & priorities prevalent.
Job holders needs to be capable of securing support for proposals & plans across functions.
Job holder to be able to build relationships & effectively influence external agencies & organisations up to director management level.
