Here at Argos we’re changing the way we do trading, moving to a more agile, cross-functional set-up with new ways of working and with data at the heart of everything we do. Our buying, digital trading, supply and product information teams will be moving into co-located “Dynamic Trading Cells” centred around each category. To support this, we’re building a brand new analytics and reporting set-up for the trading cells, to complement our existing specialist analytics teams. This will consist of a trading reporting team spanning all categories, along with embedded analytics business partners dedicated to particular categories and co-located as part of the trading cells.
We’re looking for a Senior Trading Analytics Manager to head up the team of embedded analysts supporting these new Dynamic Trading Cells. The role will initially have two direct reports, and will also directly support 3 categories alongside its line management and leadership responsibilities.
The team’s key objective will be to ensure our trading cells use insight to inform decision-making and measure success at both a strategic and day-to-day level. This will be achieved in part through empowering the teams to self-serve and answer their own questions with data where possible, and in part through performing and coordinating deep-dive analyses and communicating compelling stories based on the outcomes. This is a leadership role operating within a new set-up, and the individual will need to be comfortable with ambiguity and with driving change. There will be plenty of opportunity for the right candidate to shape the and the role of their team.
The role reports into the Digital Intelligence Controller, working alongside our Digital Optimisation, Insight & Reporting and Technology teams (with 15 team members in total), with four immediate peers. The role will also be closely aligned with other key analytical teams including Customer and Market Insight (CMI), Supply Analytics and Finance.
This role will be accountable for:
Leading a team of three analysts (this role and two direct reports) providing dedicated support to the new cross-functional dynamic trading cells
Engaging and empowering members of own dedicated category trading cells to use data and insight effectively, including:
Helping stakeholders to frame effective analytical questions that will lead to actionable insight
Assisting with interpreting and drawing conclusions from reports, with a view to building stakeholder capability in the longer-term
Building technical skills and awareness of our datasets to enable stakeholders to self-serve and conduct simple analyses, with a vision to push self-serve as far as possible
Deep dive analyses to answer more complex questions which cannot easily be addressed by self-serve, ranging from day to day performance diagnostics to longer term strategic insights
Liaising with specialist analytics teams where relevant to tap into broader insight and analytical capabilities (eg affinity modelling conducted by Customer Analytics, product substitution models conducted by Supply Analytics)
Provide ongoing feedback to central trading reporting team regarding the ongoing reporting and self-serve requirements
This role will work with a broad range of stakeholders and requires excellent communication, influence and engagement skills. Key stakeholders include:
Members of trading cells, including Commercial (buyers and trading managers), Digital Trading, Supply and Product Information – at both senior and junior levels
Analyst teams including Digital Intelligence, Customer and Market Insight and Supply Analytics
Member of broader supporting teams eg Marketing, Finance, Digital
Commercial acumen, with a good understanding of key commercial levers and decisions on a day-to-day and longer-term basis
Analytical and problem-solving mindset, with the ability to break down problems to identify which “killer” questions would lead to the valuable actionable insights
Analytics experience within a commercial retail set-up would be ideal, with a good understanding of how data and insight can drive competitive advantage in best in class retail trading teams
Broad range of analytical technical skills ideally including SQL, digital analytics tools (eg Adobe Analytics), and familiarity with tools such as Business Objects, advanced Excel – with aptitude to learn where there are gaps
Strong coaching and developmental mindset, with a desire to engage and upskill others in analytical thinking as well as technical skills
Clarity of communication and story-telling skills, able to translate data and analysis into meaningful insights and recommendations for action
Strong stakeholder management skills, with ability to influence and engage at both a senior and junior level
Experience in line management preferred
