Refresh your career. Revolutionise retail.
Argos is shaking things up. We’re going digital in a big way and giving our customers more of what they want, when they want it.
Argos is currently undertaking a transformation programme to turn the business into a “Digital Retail Leader”. This strategy has four major planks including:
Reposition channels for Digital future (increase investment in web and mobile, reduce reliance on catalogue, improve experience in stores);
More choice available faster (improve home delivery options, offer increased rapid order-in to store, extend overall ranges);
Universal customer appeal (improve overall product ranging, ensure good value for money on key items, develop further unique own brand products);
Lean and flexible cost base.
Argos has also recently been acquired by J. Sainsbury plc, driving the need to review our current strategy and identify how as one company we can build a better proposition for our customers.
To support these activities, we need to bolster the skills in the Commercial Development team which currently looks after: category development, ranging, pricing and promotions.
This role would help deliver specific improvement projects that either are looking at optimising categories that we are currently in (e.g., changing range offering, improving price positioning, optimising processes) or support new business opportunities (e.g., identifying range extension options, working with potential new partners, developing new brands).
Your key focus areas will be:
To provide strategic, commercial and/or financial support to transformation projects and other initiatives within Argos to deliver performance improvements in our core categories.
To review and analyse potential new business opportunities including organic developments and partnerships.
Deliver the above through robust commercial analysis, financial modelling, business cases and other ad hoc analysis as appropriate.
To deliver articulate conclusions orally as well as through written notes and presentations.
To provide a link between the Commercial Development team and the relevant sections of the operating companies to ensure the appropriate use of key business metrics, financial analysis, etc.
As an Assistant Development Manager your skills & experience will ideally include:
Of graduate calibre, the jobholder will have demonstrable experience of delivering results either in strategy consulting or in a strategy/business development role within a retail or FMCG environment.
Highly numerate, with proven ability to manipulate and analyse data to resolve commercial issues.
Able to communicate complex issues to the businesses management teams and influence their thinking with regard to key business decisions.
The candidate needs to be a self-starter with good skills in time and priority management. With strong project management skills, able to plan and co-ordinate multi functional projects the job holder will have a proven record of meeting tight and challenging deadlines.
The candidate must be a team player, as this role is part of a small effective team that needs to work as a unit.
Retail awareness - must at least be able to demonstrate an understanding of and passion for Retail, particularly in relation to product, although previous experience is strongly preferred.
Complexity and Creativity:
The candidate can think ‘out of the box’, will look for 80/20 solutions and uses back of the envelope calculations to further understand the problem.
Creativity is also essential in ensuring that business models and assumptions are continually reviewed both for content and the speed and efficiency with which they are produced. In addition existing methods need to be questioned and reviewed, at the coalface, to ensure that what was the most appropriate approach has not subsequently been superseded.
What you’ll get in return:
At Argos, as well as the usual company benefits, which include, 24 days holiday, save as you earn scheme, private healthcare, discretionary annual bonus, company pension scheme, you will work in an exciting environment, with the potential to develop your skills for a career that fits with your own aspirations.
